Closter is a borough in Bergen County, NJ. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 8,551. The area that is now known as Closter was hunted and fished originally by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans but was settled by Dutch people. The Dutch had a major impact on the area, and the first land grant deed was issued in 1671. The name Closter is of Dutch origin and first appears in a land deed in 1721. At the time, Closter was considered to be part of New York State. In the Dutch language, “Klooster” or “Clooster” means a quiet place, or a monastery or cloister, and it was originally pronounced with an “ow” sound, making it “Clowster.” Closter is bordered by the Bergen County municipalities of Alpine, Demarest, Emerson, Harrington Park, Haworth, and Norwood.
