The area that is now known as Closter was hunted and fished originally by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans but was settled by Dutch people. The Dutch had a major impact on the area, and the first land grant deed was issued in 1671. The name Closter is of Dutch origin and first appears in a land deed in 1721. At the time, Closter was considered to be part of New York State.
