Mold Prevention | Mold & IAQ Consultant | Mold Remediation | NJ

Mold is serious and, for some, it is a major health hazard. So, in order to avoid mold in your NJ home, there simply must be an ongoing effort to avoid moisture and to control humidity levels.

Mold Prevention Tips For Areas Of The Home

Kitchens and Bathrooms:

Consider installing exhaust fans in the home’s kitchens and bathrooms.

Bathrooms:

Never let water build-up or sit in bathrooms and continually wash shower curtains & tile with mold-killing solutions.

Washing Machines:

Keep washed clothing moving once they’ve run their cycle. Never leave wet clothes in the washing machine because mold may come rapidly.

Concrete:

There should not be fixed carpeting on concrete because it’s too easy for moisture to become trapped. Rather, use area rugs that can be lifted, washed, and/or aired out.

Crawlspaces:

Keep crawlspaces ventilated and install heavy plastic over dirt areas.

Plants:

Minimize in-home plants, especially in bedrooms as mold will often grow in the soil.

Managing Mold Prevention In The Home

Ultimately, prioritize the prevention of water entering the home. Seal the areas that are more likely to have moisture and repair cracks in the foundation that can allow it to enter. Don’t tolerate leaky pipes and be sure appliance and sink connections are fully sealed. Consider the use of dehumidifiers to trap airborne moisture and collect it in a tank that can be emptied easily. Use the dehumidifiers where mold is most likely to form, for instance in the basement, but clean them and turn them off if condensation forms on any nearby windows. Also, consider an air purifier with a quality HEPA air filter. And depending on local weather or air quality conditions like pollen, dust, or pollution – increase ventilation by opening windows and running fans to increase air circulation.
